چکیده

The partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium is investigated in a model independent way by exploiting operator relations in QCD. An exact sum rule is derived for the quark condensate valid for all density. This sum rule is simplified at low density to a new relation 〈q̄q〉∗/〈q̄q〉 = (F t π/Fπ)Z ∗1/2 π with the in-medium quark condensate 〈q̄q〉 ∗, in-medium pion decay constant F t π and in-medium pion wave-function renormalization Z ∗ π. Calculating Z ∗ π at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data and relating F t π to the isovector pion-nucleus scattering length b∗1, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleus interaction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms directly implies the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowledge of the in-medium pion mass m∗π is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Chiral Transition in QCD and Scalar Correlations

We review recent developments in exploring possible precursory phenomena of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium by examining the spectral function in the scalar channel. We emphasize that the wave function renormalization of the pion in the medium plays an essential role to induce the decrease of the pion decay constant as the order parameter of chiral transition. We also s...

Chiral Symmetry in Matter *

Soft-pion theorems are used to show how chiral symmetry constrains the contributions of low-momentum pions to the quark condensate, the pion decay constant and hadron masses, all of which have been proposed as signals of partial restoration of chiral symmetry in matter. These have contributions of order T 2 for a pion gas or of order mπ for cold nuclear matter, which have different coefficients...

Chiral symmetry in nuclei: partial restoration and its consequences

Partial restoration in nuclear matter of the chiral symmetry of QCD is discussed together with some of its possible signals. Estimates of corrections to the leading, linear dependence of the quark condensate are found to be small, implying a significant reduction of that condensate in matter. The importance of the pion cloud for the scalar quark density of a single nucleon indicates a close con...

In-medium pions and partial restoration of chiral symmetry: a model-independent analysis

Exploiting operator relations in QCD, we derive a novel and model-independent formula relating the in-medium quark condensate 〈q̄q〉∗ to the decay constant F ∗ t and the wave function renormalization constant Z∗ of the pion in the nuclear medium. Evaluating Z∗ at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-...

Medium Modification of the Pion-pion Interaction at Finite Density

We discuss medium modifications of the unitarized pion-pion interaction in the nuclear medium. We incorporate both the effects of chiral symmetry restoration and the influence of collective nuclear pionic modes originating from the p-wave coupling of the pion to delta-hole configurations. We show in particular that the dropping of the sigma meson mass significantly enhances the low energy struc...
